Idaho pharmacists may independently prescribe any FDA-approved drug category (self-administered hormonal contraceptives)or device, provided they:
Prescribe for conditions that DO NOT require a new diagnosis, or minor/self-limiting conditions, or can be diagnosed using a CLIA-waived test, or it is an emergency requiring immediate dispensing.
Standing Order
Not required in Idaho. Idaho Pharmacists may independently prescribe under the conditions specified above.
Eligible Medications: Contraceptive pills, patches, and vaginal rings, and depot injections.
Prescription Limitations:
Idaho pharmacists may prescribe up to a 15-month supply of self-administered hormonal contraceptives under their independent prescriptive authority. Prescriptions may not be refilled beyond 15 months from the original date.
Insurance Coverage (Senate Bill 1234): Beginning January 1, 2025, Idaho law mandates that insurance companies cover up to a 6-month supply of contraceptives per fill under most health plans. This does not limit pharmacist prescribing authority but affects what insurers must cover in a single fill.
Age Restrictions: No specific age requirement, but pharmacists must screen patients using USMEC guidelines.
Documentation Requirements: Pharmacists must maintain documentation that justifies the care provided, including:
Patient record information
Prescription records
Notifications to other providers
Follow-up care plans
They must also recognize the limits of their knowledge and refer patients to other healthcare
providers when appropriate.
Training Requirements: Pharmacists must complete a Board-approved contraceptive prescribing training program before providing services.
